Network Installation and Configuration

The heart of your home technology is the network it resides on.

Most home networks in place today were wired out of the simple desire to share the single Internet connection supplied by the local cable or phone company with two or three PCs in the house, and maybe share a centralized printer. All you needed to do was string a few Ethernet cables to the rooms with PCs and plug them into the back of that box called a router... and almost magically every PC in the house could have access the Internet. As MP3s and iTunes became popular, family members were able to share their music collections.

While this might have been adequate at the time, times have changed. Few people imagined back then that one day (today!) your home would be filled with a myriad of devices that all want to be connected to your network; blu ray players, media servers, HDTVs, Baby Cams, Security Cameras, iPads, ebook readers, and of course every kid has their own computer, music player, and smart phone. Even refrigerators and laundry machines have network connections!

With all those devices needing a place to "plug in" to the home LAN, the common consumer-grade off-the-shelf routers and network switches that used to work "just fine" are no longer adequate. Today, the home network needs to be every bit as expandable, robust and reliable as the IT networks we have taken for granted in commercial environments and educational facilites.
